Monetize your blog with Google Affiliate Ads for Blogger

When you share your words, thoughts and photos on Blogger, you are sharing your passions with the world. Sometimes, you’re passionate about brands or products. Starting today, you can make money by promoting relevant products in your posts, gaining income for each new customer you introduce to your favorite brands.

This is a new way for you to monetize your blog, giving you control over the advertisers and products you promote, and better connecting your readers with the things you love.

To get started, go to the Earnings tab on Blogger, and click “Get Started”. If you have an existing AdSense account and the content of your blog matches available ad categories, you're already set. Select an affiliate ad from the “Advertiser Products” widget that appears in the Post Settings panel in the post editor. If you don’t already have an AdSense account, sign up.

When you post about a brand or product from a featured advertiser, the Google Affiliate Ads for Blogged widget will help you to display an affiliate ad in your blog, which can be a text link, a product image, or a banner. You may earn commissions when someone clicks on your ads and makes a purchase on the advertiser’s site, going beyond “payment per click” to “payment per action” and extending the influential relationship you have with your audience.

Get started with Google Affiliate Ads for Blogger today to monetize your blog and bring your readers to the products you love.

Google AdSense & Blogger: An introduction

Hi, my name is Andy Chung. I work on the Google AdSense team helping online publishers, specifically Blogger users like you, ensure your blogs are optimized to generate as much income for you as possible.

A few weeks ago we met with many of you at the 2011 BlogWorld & New Media Expo. One of the consistent themes we heard was: "please provide me with more tips on how to make money with my blog.”

At your request, we’re happy to bring you a series of posts with some helpful tips on how to configure AdSense to give you the highest possible return from your blog.

If you've been thinking about monetizing your blog and are unfamiliar with how Google AdSense works, here are the three things you need to know:

1. AdSense is built into Blogger:
You can easily sign up and start showing ads on your blog, without having to leave Blogger, by clicking on the "Earnings" tab in your dashboard. After completing the AdSense application, the next step is to designate where you want the ads to appear on your blog. Once your application is approved, we’ll start serving ads and you’ll start making money. And unlike many other blogging platforms, Blogger doesn’t take a cut of your revenue.

2. AdSense serves relevant ads on your blogs:
AdSense works by matching text and image ads to your blog based on your content and the types of users that visit your site. For example, if you write about running, your readers may see ads next to your post about running shoes and equipment. Ads are created and paid for by advertisers who want to promote their products.

3. Great content is key:
Posting high quality content is the best way to maximize your returns with AdSense. It’s important to take a little extra time defining your topic, creating a post that is engaging and matters to your readers. The more interesting and appealing your content is, the more likely your readers will be to click on the ads on your blog.

This short video will also give you a quick overview of AdSense and how it works with Blogger:

Stay tuned to the Blogger Buzz blog for more tips and tricks about monetization in the coming weeks.

Make Money With Your Blog and Google AdSense

Posted by Courtney, AdSense North America team

AdSense is a great way to get paid for doing what you love to do: blogging! AdSense allows you to show targeted ads on your blog and earn revenue from your traffic. It also helps your visitors find things they may be interested in, based on the content of your blog posts. Best of all, AdSense is free and you have the option to remove the ads at any time.

The AdSense system shows ads relevant to the content of your blog and you can easily customize the look and feel of the ads to match your blog. If your blog is about fashion, you may show ads for shoe designers or clothing stores. If your blog is about cars, you may see ads for car dealerships or auto shops. Using filters, you can have control over the content of the ads you display by choosing to block categories of ads or even specific advertisers.

With the free suite of powerful AdSense reporting tools, you can pull detailed reports that will help you track your revenue and identify opportunities to earn more money. You can see earnings by day, page, domain or specific ad unit and can also use Google Analytics to see the source of your traffic and earnings.

Adding AdSense to your blog is easy. Just follow these steps:
  1. Log in to Blogger, choose your blog, and go to the “Monetize | Set up AdSense” tab.
  2. Choose where you want to show your ads on your blog and hit “Next.”
  3. If you’re new to AdSense, follow the easy online steps to sign up for a new AdSense account. If you already use AdSense, you can log in to AdSense and link your Blog to your AdSense account.

If you’re using a Classic template, you can add AdSense to your blog by following the steps outlined here.

Online publishers: Attend the Ad Manager webinar

We're committed to helping Australian publishers make money from their content, through a number of programs including AdSense and related advertising tools. A little over a year ago, we announced the beta release of our ad serving and management solution, Google Ad Manager. As a hosted ad management tool for publishers selling ads directly on their sites, it helps to sell, schedule, deliver and measure all directly-sold and network-based inventory. Over the past year, Google Ad Manager has helped our publisher partners from all over the world to increase revenue, cut serving costs and save time managing ad campaigns.

We're excited to announce the first Google Ad Manager webinar specifically for publishers in Australia and New Zealand. The webinar will be an introduction to Ad Manager for those wanting to learn more about how the technology can help optimise their advertising revenue, and will feature a live demo.

Special features of Ad Manager include its simple user interface, the ability to forecast inventory availability and the option to consistently deliver the best ad by enabling integration with AdSense.

The web seminar will be held live on Wednesday, 22nd April. Interested publishers can register for the one-hour event here.

Monetize!

You may have noticed that about a week ago a new tab showed up in Blogger for your blog. The tab is called Monetize, and in case it isn't clear what that means: it's now easier than ever to make money with your blog! (There's also a "Monetize" link from your Dashboard as well.)

The current Monetize tab allows you to apply for an AdSense account (or link your Blogger blog to an existing AdSense account). You can then choose where to place ads on your blog, and once ads start appearing on your blog, review your earnings. We use the AdSense API to pull your live earnings data from your AdSense account, so now it's easy to check how your revenues are doing without leaving the Blogger interface.

Please note that new applications may take a few days to process, and not every site will be approved (for more on the eligibility criteria for an AdSense account, please see here). Details about the monetize tab and the information presented there is available in Blogger's Help section.

Making money from your blog with Google AdSense

One of the best things about working at Google is hearing stories from individuals around Australia who have used our products. We often hear how someone has used Google to research a car purchase, plan their dream holiday, or find a new home. But Darren Rowse's experience just blew us away - he didn't just search for those things, he partnered with Google to attain them. Darren first discovered blogging in 2002, and thought he'd give it a try. He started writing about his observations on spirituality and pursuits with digital photography, and gradually built up a loyal readership. In 2003, he placed his first ever advertisement on his blog using Google AdSense.

Google AdSense allows website owners to earn money by serving relevant and useful ads to their web pages. From that first month, Darren started receiving earnings from Google's wide range of Australian and international advertisers. At first, Darren expected that the money would be enough to cover only small things; as he told us, "I added that first advertisement to my blog on a whim, with the lofty dream that I might be able to pay for my blog's hosting costs". But as he started to devote more serious time to his hobby, Darren was soon earning more than he ever thought he could. As he told us recently, "Over five years later those little text ads have paid my mortgage, fed my family and enabled me to move my blogging from a hobby, to a part-time job, to a full-time job and beyond".

These days, Darren runs a number of successful blogs, his most successful being Digital Photography School. He has become known as one of Australia's pre-eminent blogging experts, and posts regular tips and advice on ProBlogger.net, a highly respected and immensely successful resource for bloggers around the world. From his evangelist role in the blogging community, he has even co-authored a book, and set up his own blog ad network.

We recently caught up with Darren at his Melbourne home office, and asked him about his experience with Google AdSense.

Google Australia is proud to partner with Darren and other Australian web publishers through the Google AdSense program. You can read more of his story, and that of other successful AdSense publishers on the AdSense Blog.

More information for advertisers about our Content network

Our Australian advertisers often ask: "What kinds of web sites make up the Google content network?"

To help answer this question, we just re-launched the Partners page on the Google content network microsite to include a more comprehensive set of examples of where your ads can appear. The content network is comprised of hundreds of thousands of web sites worldwide, from information and news sites like The Sydney Morning Herald and the New York Times, to wedding sites like I-do.com.au. The revamped Partners page is meant to better demonstrate a small selection of the variety of sites available. Below are some features of the new Partners page:

  • Sites are organised by category. This will help you browse sites by categories that represent your target audience, such as finance, entertainment and technology. For example, if you sell rental cars, you might browse through the "Travel" category to see examples of relevant sites. Or, if your target is female, you can try the "female interest" category.

  • Once you find a site that's relevant to your product or service, you can use placement targeting to target your ads to that site directly. We recommend you use the Placement Tool to help you with this. If your campaign is already running on the content network, you can see the sites where your ad has appeared by running a Placement performance report.

  • For those of you targeting users in other countries, a drop-down menu lets you browse sample partner sites in countries in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

New from AdSense: video units

AdSense recently introduced a feature called video units, that lets you include relevant YouTube video on your blog, and make money from ads on it. Here’s what they have to say about it:
"We're excited about the launch of video units -- a new way to enrich your blog with quality, relevant video content in an embedded, customizable player. Simply embed a snippet of code and have relevant YouTube partner content streamed to your blog. You can choose categories of video to target to your site, select content from individual YouTube partners, or have video automatically targeted to your blog's content. Companion and text overlay ads are relevant and non-intrusive. To further blend the YouTube player into your blog, you can also customize the color scheme and layout as well as choose from three different player sizes."
AdSense Help has some more information about video units. Once you’ve created the code for a video unit, you can easily add it to your blog’s template using an HTML/JavaScript page element.

Get more out of your AdSense!

Web publishers and bloggers - when was the last time you took a look at your Google AdSense performance? The AdSense team here in Sydney is really excited to be holding its first ever optimisation webinar for existing AdSense publishers on the 19th of September. It will be streamed live online.

We'll be sharing our most up-to-date, revenue-enhancing tips, as well as giving you the opportunity to ask questions of our optimisation specialists on all aspects of AdSense performance. We're also inviting a special guest, Richard Tribe, from www.ski.com.au who will be presenting his experience on how AdSense has helped him develop his website.

As a taster, here are the top three tips for getting the most out of your AdSense:

  1. Knowledge is power - Look at your channel data to find what layout works best for your site. If you don't know what channels are, get some!

  2. Size does matter – Our medium rectangles (300 x 250) and wide skyscrapers (160 x 600) are easy on the eye and attract a lot of natural attention, so maximise their beauty and add them to your site! Advertisers are in love with these formats too.

  3. Integrate and conquer – Don't hide your ads - make them part of your site and you'll see your AdSense performance soar. By placing ads where they are relevant and useful to your website's community, you'll find their experience with your site actually improves.

To attend the webinar or for further details, simply drop us a line with your AdSense publisher ID here.

We hope to see you there!

AdSense update: Inline Ads

Just wanted to bring your attention to a small yet nifty (and long-requested!) feature we recently added to Blogger's AdSense integration: inline ads

You can now show AdSense ads inside your block of blog posts, up to 3 times on your main blog page. This should definitely improve monetization for those of you using AdSense on your blogs, as this places the ads inline with your blogs' actual content. The AdSense blog shows how it works, and here are a few example blogs using the feature:

Agreement with News Digital Media

Google Australia has formed partnerships with a lot of great Australian websites, large and small. Today, we're excited to announce a significant agreement with News Digital Media.

Under the agreement, News Digital Media properties (including NEWS.com.au, dailytelegraph.com.au, theaustralian.com.au, heraldsun.com.au, couriermail.com.au, perthnow.com.au, adelaidenow.com.au, themercury.com.au and regional and community newspaper websites) and FOXSPORTS.com.au will have web and site search powered by Google.

Google will also provide keyword and contextual text ads on these sites, through our AdSense program.

This means that our AdWords advertisers can now have their ads appear on News Digital Media's range of websites, contextually matched to relevant articles. Having so many of News’ assets from across the country join our Content Network in Australia is another great step for our advertisers.

We look forward to working with News Digital Media in the years ahead.

Attention Web publishers: the Google AdSense team is in Australia!

We're excited to introduce ourselves at the Google AdSense Australia team, which joined our growing Sydney office last September.

As you may know, AdSense connects Australian and New Zealand web publishers with Google's
local and international advertiser base, delivering text, image, and even video ads. Google returns only the most targeted ads to a web page, allowing publishers to display ads that their user community will find relevant and interesting, as well as providing them with a steady stream of revenue.

We'd be delighted to hear from you to discuss what AdSense can do for your website. Since September, our team has expanded to offer localised service and support, and has driven some exciting initiatives in the Australian and NZ online advertising sector. We've toured Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Auckland with the AdSense Roadshow, and gathered plenty of local interest along the way.

Thousands of Australian and New Zealand publishers have joined the AdSense content network to make use of the many customised advertising options available. We're excited to partner with a wide range of publishers - from those who cater to a wide Australian audience, such as Fairfax Digital, to popular community sites like eatability.com.au. AdSense also benefits niche sites, such as ozoutback.com.au and vorb.org.nz, by connecting them with advertisers that offer content relevant to their readers' interests.

We'll be posting up regular hints and tips for optimising your AdSense performance, as well as notifying our publishers of new product developments. You might see us at the next trade show or industry meeting. In the meantime if you have any questions, drop us a line.

Working with Fairfax

Since we opened in Australia in 2003, we have developed a large number of great partnerships with a wide range of Australian businesses.

Today, we're delighted to announce a partnership with Fairfax Digital.

I'm happy to welcome their sites (including www.smh.com.au and www.theage.com.au) to the Google AdSense for Content network. These sites will feature contextually relevant Google AdWords.

In addition, an increasing amount of Fairfax Digital's video content will be available through Google Video. Plus, Google Maps will be integrated across the Fairfax Digital network, which will greatly enhance users' experience.

We're delighted to be working with Fairfax Digital in this way to help monetise, enhance and extend the reach of, its online content. Going forward, we're excited to build on these foundations to further expand our relationship.

Google Australia is also looking forward to building partnerships with many other Australian website owners and partners in coming months and years.
